Charter school in tough neighborhood gets all its seniors into college

The entire senior class at Chicago's only public all-male, all-African-American high school has been accepted to four-year colleges. At last count, the 107 seniors had earned spots at 72 schools across the nation.

Tutoring Program

Tutoring is sponsored at participating schools. Students can take advantage of tutoring at their school in the areas of math, science and communication arts. To find out more about the tutoring program, contact the GEAR UP-St. Louis liaison at your school.


College Preparation

  • Students participate in college tours, college prep workshops and college fairs to equip and prepare them for college.  College tours include  local colleges/universities, UM-System campuses and out of state tours to locations such as Illinois, Washington DC and Atlanta.
  • Students learn about college admission requirements, financial aid resources and what they need to do in high school to be ready to go to college. They also learn about the connection between going to college and their career aspirations. College tours will focus on the UM-System campuses (St. Louis, Rolla, Columbia and Kansas City) and other local and out-of-state colleges/universities.

 

Career, Personal and Leadership Development

GEAR UP focuses on a holistic approach in helping students prepare for post secondary opportunities. To accomplish this GEAR UP provides students with program opportunities to develop leadership and decision making skills, intrapersonal skills and career exploration skills.

  • Empowering Young Women and Men Conferences: Annual conferences geared toward informing students about various youth issues and equipping students with the skills needed to be successful in high school and life in general.
  • Empowering Young Women and Men Clubs: Participating schools sponsor student driven clubs that focus on developing members personal and leadership skills.
  • Career Exploration: Students participate in career fairs, job shadowing and internships to explore and determine their career aspirations.

 

Saturday Learning Academy (SLA)

The SLA provides subject area tutors, mentors and small group instruction to increase students' subject matter knowledge and help improve grades. Tutors and mentors assist students with homework assignments. SLA meets on UMSL South Campus. A session runs in the Fall and in the Spring. Each session meets over four consecutive Saturdays.
